Preventive Dentistry

Are you tired of emergency trips to the dentist? Would you like to find a way to help your family avoid complex treatment and reduce your dental expenses?

Good oral health is a precious thing, but it’s easy to take for granted until something goes wrong. At Eagle Mountain Family Dental, we use preventive dental services that help you maintain a strong, healthy smile and reduce your risk for problems in the future.

The Mouth-Body Connection

Dr. Darin Bateman is actively involved with staying at the forefront of modern dentistry. He has taken countless hours of continuing education and stays current with emerging trends. When he notes something that affects your oral health, he will let you know about it.

It seems that every day new studies emerge that show us a connection between overall health and well-being and your oral health. Chronic inflammations like gum disease have been linked to heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, and pregnancy complications, to name just a few.

Preventive Services That Protect Your Smile

Staying a step ahead of dental conditions like tooth decay and gum disease is easy when you check in with your dentist twice a year. These visits give Dr. Bateman and our team the opportunity to see how you’re doing and if there are any problems that need our attention.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

Dr. Bateman starts by checking all your teeth and noting any changes or areas of concern in your patient record. If you are a new patient and have no current x-rays, he will recommend that we update them. Since we can’t treat what we can’t see, we need dental x-rays to show us what’s happening inside your tooth. This allows Dr. Bateman to find and treat problems in their earliest stages.

We believe in using technology to educate our patients. It’s so much easier for you to understand why you need treatment when you can see the problem with your own eyes.

Digital x-rays produce high-resolution images that let Dr. Bateman easily detect tooth decay or gum disease long before we would find it with a visual exam. We also use intraoral cameras that give you a close-up view of the inside of your mouth. Dr. Bateman shares these images with you so you can see exactly what he sees and understand why you need treatment.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Every exam includes an oral cancer screening at our dental office. According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Unfortunately, the mortality rate is high because oral cancer is often not found until its later stages. Routine oral cancer screenings can save your life.

Professional Dental Cleanings

Do you brush and floss like a pro and wonder why you still need twice-yearly dental cleanings with a hygienist? The answer is that keeping your teeth clean and disease free is a team effort. A professional dental cleaning picks up where your oral hygiene leaves off and gets into all the cracks and crevices between teeth where your brush and floss can’t reach.

Also, no matter how well you brush, you can’t remove tartar. It is a calcified deposit that is formed when plaque is not removed from your teeth. Only a dental hygienist can remove tartar using specialized instruments. Tartar that’s not removed from your teeth can lead to gum disease, gum recession, and even tooth loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

A lot happens during your first appointment at Eagle Mountain Family Dental! As a new patient, we need to gather information about your general and oral health as well as the medications you take. Many medical conditions complicate your oral health, so we need to see the “big picture.”

Once we have your comprehensive history, Dr. Bateman will talk with you to define your expectations and desires for treatment. He’ll discuss past dental experiences you’ve had to understand how we can give you the best experience possible.

  • Soft tissue evaluation – Dr. Bateman checks the tissues in the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, face, neck and salivary glands for signs of enlargement.
  • Oral cancer screening - performed on every patient at every exam
  • Periodontal evaluation – includes a screening and noting any areas of concern.
  • TMD screening – check for problems with the TMJ (temporomandibular joint)
  • Hard tissue exam – evaluate teeth for signs of decay, fracture, wear, or teeth grinding.
  • Occlusal (bite) evaluation – check to see your teeth come together when you bite down
  • Digital x-rays as needed for diagnosis

After your exam, Dr. Bateman will propose an initial treatment plan, and a member of our team will help you arrange future appointments as necessary. We will also discuss how your insurance benefits apply as well as financing with CareCredit.

Occasionally, yes. We can’t treat what we can’t see, and we won’t guess about your oral health.

Digital dental x-rays (radiographs) are images of your teeth that Dr. Darin Bateman uses to evaluate your oral health. Visual dental exams at our Azle, TX dental office are essential and help Dr. Bateman to detect many problems. But they only tell us what’s happening on the outside of your teeth. The problem is that most dental problems start to develop inside your teeth or under your gums, making dental x-rays invaluable for giving us the big picture.

How are Dental X-Rays Used?

Digital x-rays are used with low levels of radiation to capture images of the interior of your teeth and gums. This information helps Dr. Bateman identify problems like cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and impacted teeth.

You are exposed to much less radiation with digital x-rays than you are with traditional film x-rays. Since the images they produce are digital, Dr. Bateman can share them with you on your chairside monitor. He can adjust the contrast and enlarge or rotate the image, so you have a clear picture of what is happening and why we recommend treatment. Keeping you informed about your oral health is one of our priorities because it allows you to make more confident decisions about your treatment.
